The Challenge for la Verretta d'Oro: Medieval Emotions at the Giostra dell' Archidado
The Giostra dell'Archidado is a historic medieval reenactment held every year in Cortona on the first Sunday of June. Its origins date back to 1397, when it was established to celebrate the marriage between Francesco Casali, lord of the city, and the Sienese noblewoman Antonia Salimbeni.
Today, the event brings the atmosphere of the Middle Ages back to life: the historic center comes alive with costumed parades, ladies and knights, flag-wavers, crossbowmen, and performers, creating an immersive experience that blends history and tradition. The highlight of the celebration is the competition among the city’s districts (Quintieri), which vie for the prestigious Golden Verretta.
The celebrations are also accompanied by ancient religious rituals, such as the Wax Pouring (Colata dei Ceri) and the Offering of Candles to Saint Margaret, traditions documented as early as 1325 and linked to the patron saints of Cortona. In the past, these festivities attracted numerous pilgrims and were enriched with shows, jousts, and popular performances.
The modern reenactment is inspired by the lavish celebrations of the 1397 wedding, which saw the participation of nobles from various cities and the involvement of the entire Cortona community, with gifts, banquets, music, and tournaments.
In summary, the Giostra dell' Archidado is now an event that combines history, tradition, and spectacle, transforming Cortona into a true medieval stage.
