Medieval Market and Scenes of Life in the Middle Ages: jesters, falconers, and archers
Opening of the Taverna del Balestriere
On the occasion of the traditional Medieval Week, the town of Cortona transforms into a fascinating journey back in time, offering visitors and locals a unique experience filled with historical atmospheres, performances, and authentic flavors.
At the heart of the event are the evocative medieval markets, taking place from Sunday, May 31 to Tuesday, June 2, 2026. The streets of the historic center will come alive with stalls offering a rich selection of local products, where visitors can rediscover ancient recipes from rural tradition, prepared according to customs handed down through the centuries. There will also be displays of local craftsmanship, with skilled artisans working materials using medieval techniques and offering live demonstrations of trades that are now rare. Amid the aromas of spices, freshly baked bread, and rustic specialties, the markets provide an unmissable opportunity to immerse yourself in the authentic flavors of the region.
Enhancing the atmosphere will be costumed performers, jesters, musicians, and street artists who will animate the squares with shows and entertainment, recreating scenes of everyday medieval life. There will also be falconry displays, archery demonstrations, and moments dedicated to discovering ancient martial arts.
The highlight of the reenactment remains the historic Giostra dell’Archidado, officially established in 1397 to celebrate the marriage of the Lord of Cortona to a noblewoman from Siena. Today, as in the past, the city’s districts compete in an exciting crossbow tournament, showcasing precision, skill, and competitive spirit. The event is accompanied by evocative costumed parades, flag-waving performances, fire shows, and themed evenings that bring back the charm and splendor of medieval Cortona.
Completing the experience is the opening of the Taverna del Balestriere, where visitors can enjoy traditional dishes in a historical setting, fully experiencing the convivial atmosphere of ancient taverns.
An event that engages all the senses and transports the audience on a journey through time, between history, tradition, and spectacle.
